Located about eight mile from the small town of Ballater, Balmoral is the summer residence of the British Royal family. It was purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1852. The new castle was completed in 1856 and the old building torn down the same year.
The River Dee runs through the 50,000+ acre estate of Balmoral. We crossed the icy water on foot via a bridge after parking our motorhome in the car park.
We visited during the low season, when the only interior room available for viewing (by tour) was the ballroom. Very interesting history and beautiful furnishings. For about six weeks in the summer season, they now offer small tours of several rooms. See www.balmoralcastle.com
Dressed for cold weather, we explored the grounds including the pastures occupied by Shetland and Fell ponies. Even in late November the heather was in bloom.
We also visited the game warden's house (above) where Queen Victoria wrote her journals. I always find writing spaces fascinating. I wish we could have gone inside.
Although the gardens lay dormant, it was fun to walk around the flower beds, imagining them in full bloom. This trellis tunnel leads to the greenhouse in the distance. Having worked in a greenhouse in my youth, I always find them interesting. When we approached, gardeners were working outside near the greenhouse, and they invited us to look around inside. Such a delight to see cheerful geraniums this time of year. A chilly but terrific day!
