Located three and a half miles northeast of Oban, the ruins of Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel are delightful to explore, even on a cold day. Duncan MacDougall built the castle in the 1200s, but then Robert the Bruce captured it in 1308.

The castle's advantageous spot on a small peninsula at the bottom of Ardmucknish Bay gave its occupants a strategic advantage in case of invaders. It also served as a prison for Flora MacDonald who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape Scotland after losing the battle at Culloden in 1746.

We climbed all over the rugged battlements, including the three-story gatehouse built about 1500. Taking the photo, my shadow is visible looking out to the bay.

After exploring the castle, we walked a short distance to the the chapel ruins. In spite of the chilly temps, we felt the holy atmosphere as we passed through the arches and sanctuary space of the chapel. Grateful for God's presence wherever we travel.
