As you can probably tell by these photos of my husband Brian, he loves to be out on the water. He grew up fishing for fun with his father and has had various boats himself. On three occasions, we traveled by ferry between countries. Details about the size of our motorhome were required when purchasing tickets online. The LPG (propane) had to be turned off when we boarded the vessel, which a ferry worker confirmed with us. Other than than, it was not a complicated process. The first photo is at the harbor in Hirtshals, Denmark in the month of July. The Colorline ferry like the one behind Brian took us to Larvik, Norway - a 4.5 hour nighttime crossing.
In Europe, for their safety ferry passengers are not allowed to stay in their vehicles. You can reserve reclining seats in which to sleep, sort of. These are located in a dark, quiet room designated specifically for sleeping. We did this twice, but if we ever did an overnight ferry crossing again, I would book the more expensive option of a cabin with a bed. The photo above shows Cherbourg, France in the background. We were on our way to Rosslare, Ireland on a Stena Line ferry. Our second overnight crossing for a total of 18 hours. The final photo was taken in the parking lot at the Dublin, Ireland ferry terminal. From here we took an Irish Ferries ferry to Holyhead, Wales. A quick crossing in the late afternoon of about three hours.
