In the Derbyshire Dales of the Peak District in central England lies a surprising treasure of history, lovely views, caves, and even a cable car. Brian and I found the Heights of Abraham a relaxing place to spend a half-day during our travels in the United Kingdom. Great for families and graying couples like ourselves.

Unless you are deathly afraid of heights, the cable car provides a relaxing ride that hints at the potential views at the top. Built in 1844, Victoria Prospect Tower gives another opportunity for panoramic vistas after a short climb of the spiral staircase. The metallic silver, gold, and copper-colored cows in the foreground of the photo surprised us with their quirky and artsy flair along the path to the tower.

We wandered along the paths all over the park and estate. This view over a pool with patio dining umbrellas below, and then out to the rolling landscape, caught my eye. A small museum, "The Long View," gives the 230-year history of the Heights. It was quite the recreation getaway back in the day.

View of Riber Castle, a 19th century country house, with the village of Matlock Bath in the foreground. There is no parking available  to access the Heights. Rather, paid parking is located in the village of Matlock Bath. Then a short and shady walk takes you to the base of the cable car.

We took one of the guided cave tours, which was an easy walk with a few places where stooping down slightly was necessary to protect one's head. Cave history includes the fact that in 1787 the Great Rutland Cavern was first opened for "shows." The spectacle now is composed mostly of colored lights to show off the geology.

After enjoying the Heights of Abraham, we descended via cable car. Walking back to  Matlock Bath, we crossed the River Derwent again.  We looked around the touristy town and grabbed a bite to eat. Then on the road again through the pastoral landscape of the Derbyshire Dales with its hedgerows and rock walls. A delightful day!
