A huge complex of six palaces, the Alhambra contains history from the Roman, Muslim, and Spanish eras. Originally built in the thirteenth century as a Muslim fortress, the Alhambra was captured in the late fifteenth century by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Kept intact for royal and military purposes, its stunning Moorish architecture, artwork, and furnishings make it a must-see in today's Granada.

The Alhambra features beautiful courtyards, gardens, and an interesting water supply system. We spent the entire day here exploring and soaking in the views within the palace and outward toward the city and mountains. A bus can be taken from Old Town Granada, but we walked up the hill, enjoying the glimpses of the fortress wall through the trees. Our anticipation was rewarded with one of our most memorable days in Spain.
