The entrance to Melk Abbey delights the eyes with its beauty and grandeur. Once through the arch and inside the square, we were further impressed by its sheer size. This Benedictine Abbey offers an astounding example of Baroque architecture and artwork. Fun fact: the Melk Abbey commemorates the days of the year with its 365 windows.

Located on cliffs above the Danube River, the abbey’s terrace affords panoramic views of the countryside and the small town of Melk.

Entrance to the Stiftskirche or Abbey Church. Taking photos inside is not allowed, but it does not disappoint in its opulent Baroque decorations including beautiful frescoes. This is a lovely place throughout including the outdoor sculptures and gardens. Originally built in the 1100s, after a devastating fire, it was rebuilt and completed in 1718 as indicated above the archway where we exited. Auf Wiederschen, Melk Abbey!
