Less famous than the peninsula to its north, the Ring of Beara or the Beara Peninsula Loop in west Ireland is worth the drive, if you have the time. Its ruggedness made us feel that we were truly out in the remote countryside. The Ring of Beara features Healy Pass, elevation 977 feet above sea level. We parked just before the summit and walked to the shrine at the top.
This sheep has a panoramic view of the Ring of Beara road winding up to the top at Healy Pass. Brian had to be extra careful driving here because sometimes, unlike this one, the sheep choose to lie down in the road.
After soaking up the panoramic views, it's time to head down the other side of the pass. Having been in Ireland for over a week at this point, we knew to keep our eyes peeled for scenic views. They can happen around any bend like this fairy-tale scene below.
Along the Beara Peninsula drive is located a small town called Eyeries. We stopped here looking for ice cream and were delighted by the bonus of brightly painted houses on several streets. Such a picturesque place!
